Many of us in real estate found ourselves in this profession as a second or third choice. Often, it was a life event that prompted us to pivot in a new direction, and real estate became that unexpected path.
This mirrors my own journey. There was a period when both my parents were laid off simultaneously after dedicating 25 and 30 years to their respective companies. It had a significant impact on me and reinforced my interest in entrepreneurship. Real estate eventually became my path.
Over the past 25 years, I've had the opportunity to get coached by and work with some of the best digital marketers on the planet. I will always be a student, constantly seeking out the best of the best to expand my knowledge so I can provide more value to others.
While I'm grateful for the business I've cultivated, it's important to acknowledge that it demanded an immense amount of hard work, determination, and genuine grit to reach this point. And it still requires continuous effort to keep things running smoothly.
If you're not prepared to commit to the depth of effort required and do whatever it takes, I might not be the right person to assist you on your journey because there is no Easy Button.
On page 35 of the Millionaire Real Estate Agent, Gary Keller writes about two major events in his life that changed his thinking. Here's one of those lessons that a professor shared with him....
“You need to realize that people have lived before you. And you might be wise to slow down for just a second and figure out what they learned on their journey before you start your own”.
Success does leave clues and modeling those clues is a surefire way to get on the path to excellence, no matter what type of business you're building.
We're instructed to start with proven models, then add creativity. If we start with creativity, we will likely make the model ineffective. We chose to create our systems based upon proven models. If you'd rather reinvent the wheel, you'll likely find it's not a shortcut.
I'm a huge fan of "The E-Myth Revisited" by Michael Gerber.
He hit the nail on the head when he pointed out that most small business owners struggle to separate the actual work the business does from the business itself. His advice to work "on" the business, not "in" it, is pure gold.
As small business owners, it makes sense that most real estate agents fall into the same trap. They think their clients will only want to work with them, and that they're the only ones who can deliver top-notch service. It's like they're stuck in this mindset where they have to be involved in every little detail.
I saved this image below from a Kayak ad that perfectly illustrates how most agents think. It's like they're carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders, thinking they have to do it all themselves.
You know, it's important to stay humble and recognize that people aren't necessarily loyal to you as an individual. Instead, they're loyal to the standards you uphold. That's why it's crucial to take the time to define your standards and create systems that reinforce them.
If you're not a big fan of operating with systems, that's okay too. But just know that our approach is deeply rooted in our obsession with systems. So, if you're not really into that, you might not find what we offer to be the right fit for you. And that's totally fine – we're all about finding the best fit for everyone involved.
